Mother of pearl buttons are made from an iridescent material, also known as nacre, that covers the inner layer of pearl oysters. The iridescence that makes nacre so attractive is a result of the aragonite crystals of the shell. The shells have a variance of thicknesses that are close to the wavelengths of visible light.
The wavelengths or colors in each button depend on the button’s thickness and where the light strikes the button. Slight irregularities on the surfaces make every piece of nacre unique, so much so that when viewed from different angles, different colors are reflected.
Though rich and lustrous in color and detail MOP buttons will not wither away after dry cleaning like cheap resin buttons. They are heavier and have a temperature that is cooler than their plastic counter part.
Because of their beauty and durability, MOP buttons also serves as a brand aesthetic that we believe makes your shirt more unique.
